چکیده

When threatened, sea hares secrete ink and opaline. This mixture has now been shown to act on peripheral chemosensory neurons of spiny lobsters, stimulating feeding-related behaviours as a deceptive method of avoiding predation.

The neuroecology of chemical defenses.

Chemicals are a frequent means whereby organisms defend themselves against predators, competitors, parasites, microbes, and other potentially harmful organisms. Much progress has been made in understanding how a phylogenetic diversity of organisms living in a variety of environments uses chemical defenses. Chief among these advances is determining the molecular identity of defensive chemicals a...

Sea Hares Use Novel Antipredatory Chemical Defenses

Numerous studies have demonstrated that chemical defenses protect prey from predation and have often assumed that these defenses function by repelling predators. Surprisingly, few have investigated the mechanisms whereby predators are affected by these defenses. Here, we examine mechanisms of chemical defense of sea hares (Aplysia californica), which, when attacked by spiny lobsters (Panulirus ...

Effects of algal diet on the performance and susceptibility to predation of the sea hare Aplysia parvula

Although sea hares are well known for acquiring algal secondary metabolites from their diet, the effects of diet on fitness and the susceptibility of sea hares to predators are poorly understood. We examined the effects of diet on the performance of the sea hare Aplysia parvula, and measured predation by reef fishes on sea hares raised on different seaweeds. Diet-switching, body size, the prese...

Octopuses

What are they? Octopuses and their relatives, the cuttlefish and squids, form the class of modern cephalopods (coleoids). These are soft-bodied molluscan invertebrates like garden snails or sea hares (Aplysia). The modern cephalopods appeared in the sea at the same time as bony fish; more than 200 million years ago. The old cephalopods are virtually extinct — their only living representative is...

Aplysia

What is Aplysia? A genus of gastropod molluscs well-known as ‘model organisms’ in neuroscience, particularly work on the cellular biology of learning and memory (for his contributions Eric Kandel shared the 2000 Nobel prize for Physiology or Medicine). Their latin name comes from L’Aplysia — “that which one cannot wash”. Aplysia (Figure 1) has one of the earliest mentions in the literature of a...
